accessibili-t project

Throughout the world there are many millions of people whom face the challenges of accessing a satisfactory toilet or stoma-station. The efficiency of the products and the effectiveness of the facilitates poorly cater for the countless variety of potential users. Issues streaming from minimal design considerations, unapplied universal design principles, and user anthropocentric data are highly consistence through the product range.

This project was initiated to create accessible toilets and stoma-stations for all types of people who are alternately-abled in all environments. Specifically, this design was created to retrofit onto existing facilities while providing a discrete and highly effective solution for an intrusive problem.

The client “Accessibili-t” requested for a mechanical product, innovative, fixed in facility, and could be retrofitted. In addition, this project took aims towards creating a sense of dignity, safety, security, efficiency, and adaptability.

The Transfer board Board is a retrofitting and discrete product that provides both a 280 degree pivoting seat and 180 degree pivoting board to allow alternately-abled people to transfer from a range of access points. The investigation into existing transfer methods uncovered a large problem revolving around one’s ability to position correctly in a small space for a toilet transfer. This problem usually resulted in frustration, difficulty, and in cases injury from falling.

This design uses both the mounting point on the toilet itself and the wheelchair to anchor the product securely, locking the products rotation with friction when pressure is applied onto the board. The accompanying video illustrates the rotations of the transfer board.

rotating seat

  • The ‘hinge’ and ‘rotating seat’ components provide the ability to approach from multiple angles, providing a more efficient and natural feel to the process.

    Adaptable Facility Positioning:

“not falling or injuring one’s self as a part of basic human rights, their safety and dignity. It is also expected that a transfer board is adaptable to be used in any position for a wide variety of users needs.”

Friction Locking Design

  • When pressure is applied to the product transfer seat, the friction locking mechanism safely secures the rotating platform while the product is in use.

Mounting Clips

  • Used to further secure the product to the bowl of the toilet seat. This prevents the product from pulling off the toilet while in use.

Mounting Options

Mounting Bracket

The purpose behind this bracket is to provide rotation point and clamp for the pivoting toilet seat. This bracket was made to directly retrofit onto all existing toilet using the same methods as current toilet seats. This means that no changes need to be made to current infrastructure and the existing caretaker can spend 2 minuets bolting on the product.

  • Firmly secures the whole design to the toilet using a clamp design and large steel bolts.

  • Provides an extremely strong rotating axis for the ‘Transfer Seat’.

  • Mounts to existing bolting holes on toilet.

Reinforced pivoting hinge

  • Pivots 180 degrees to cater for the different heights of wheelchairs.

  • Bound with an 8mm steel rod is used as the pivoting axis.

  • This component also wields a ‘Bulk Head’, transferring the load directly onto the toilet.

  • 30mm thickness of hinge component to provide significantly more strength.
