Project Description:
The Pil Pal, an evolution in medical well-being, now provides society with a safe and secure way to assist Alzheimer’s dementia patients with independently managing their own medication while providing remote monitoring for caregivers through a mobile application.
The Pil Pal acts as a guide for the patient, using interactive technology and sensors to assist patients through the management of their day. In addition, the Pil Pal provides critical ‘mental stimulation’ for the patient through a reward system. This system provides photos after their medication process is complete, enlightening the patients day with fond memories they may have started to lose (uploaded by the patients family).
Furthermore, the Pil Pal’s system connects the family, care givers, and doctors together to simplify the process of caring for the patient. This application allows for an efficient pill cartridge replacement system with pharmacies and connection with medical professionals for any ongoing support.
The problem
As we drive further into the future, society tends to neglect Alzheimer’s healthcare needs, leaving patients with basic support, facilities, and products while watching other industries flourish. Alzheimer’s, a progressive cognitive decline disease, has been neglected in terms of assistive technology and now desires innovation to increase patient’s independence and assist caregivers. In partnership with Philips, a leader in ‘remote healthcare’, this project aims to tend to the latent needs of the patients and their caregivers – relieving them of typical routine based tasks and providing an innovative remote monitoring solution.
Without assistive technology, patients tend to feel disconnected from their family, as they can’t contribute or give back to their loved ones.
This undesirable trend of feeling disconnected has led to the patients desiring independence – to give back and create a stronger connection with their family.
This excessive dependence on carers makes the patients feel unloved and unwanted as they create stress and struggle for those surrounding them. By neglecting the patients, the need for assistance in this context is still apparent – the patient and work force still suffers from struggles of excessive monitoring and dependence. To address this issue, a specific interactive product shall be designed to cater for the user’s latent needs while considering the desire for remote monitoring – providing relief and reassurance for the carers through a system network design.
