Project Purpose
This project was initiated to provide designers with a tool for both planning and visualizing motor shows in real-time. Instead of waiting for renders to process, Showcase provides efficiency through collaborative real-time design, where all parties can be involved and make decisions while in virtual reality.
Process
CAD Preperation
With the reference CAD supplied, optimisation and the construction of the scene assets commenced. Each asset was individually modelled using blender due to its UV unwrapping features and surface modelling capabilities. The creation of high quality CAD assets was critical in this project as the texturing process would not result in HD textures, ultimately impacting the realism of the scene.
Creating ideal mesh
Presented is an example of a piece of CAD which was created and used through our HD render pipeline. While only a basic semi-specular texture was applied to this specific model, it exhibits the model mesh and its complexity which is fairly moderate. This moderate level of detail allows for a high material resolution when using substance painter, while also being optimised for the VR scene.
UV Unwrapping assets
Presented is an example of a piece of CAD which was created and used for the VR Design Tool. UV Unwrapping is a critical step of this process, allowing tectures to correctly map to the mesh of the model.
This model exhibits the UV Unwrapping process of marking seams to then unwrap the mesh. This is then imported substance painter to be textured and imported into the VR scene.
Material creation
Once the CAD assets were prepared, materials were created using Substance Designer and painter. This process was used to replicate the desired textures at a high standard. Illustrated is how a material is created in substance designer, which can either be exported into substance painter or directly into the scene.
Material Result
This image illustrates the result of HD texturing in substance designer and painter. Such HD textures brings the scene to life and provides the user with extremely accurate representations of how their design will look in reality, providing confidence in their design.
